How to Be the Light of the World

As Christians we are called to be the light of the world.  But what does it really mean?

Jesus said:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life “(NIV, John 8.12).

I believe that when Jesus says He is the light of the world what He actually means is that He is the hope of the world. And that whoever follows Him will never perish and instead have everlasting hope of being saved.

Jesus also calls us as His followers to be the light of the world. He knew that He is not going to be present with us in the human body for long so He wants us to let His light shine through us even when He is not with us anymore. He wants us to be the hope of the world by pointing others to Him and sharing the gospel with them.

Jesus wants to be the light of the world for others through us.

Here are some steps to being the light of the world:

 1. Be noticeable

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5.14).

So if we are to be the light of the world than we need to be noticeable. Not in a way of seeking attention but rather being true to our beliefs and not being ashamed to show the world that we are different from it.

Not because we want to separate ourselves from the world but because we want to model to the world a way of life that glorifies God. By being different from the world we are made noticeable. We naturally call attention to ourselves. It makes people wonder what is different about us. And this is the starting point of making disciples.

2. Be enlightening

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house (Matthew 5.15).

So to be the light of the world is to make darkness disappear. We make the darkness disappear by serving others in love – letting His light shine through us.

And this kind of service makes people connect with us and therefore makes their hearts open to listen about what we have to say about God. This kind of loving service enlightens people that there must be more to life and they start asking us questions about our beliefs. And this kind of loving connection makes it possible for us to share the gospel so that it is being received.

The key to making disciples is not sharing the gospel as much as we can but rather witnessing to people by our loving service as much as we can.

Then they will be inclined to find out more about what makes us who we are. Or rather Who gives us the power to be who we are and in Whom the hope for life is found.

3. Lead

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven ( Matthew 5.16).

When a person is lost in the darkness he or she is led by the light towards his or her home. So we as Christians are called to be that light for others by showing them the way to their home in Heaven and their Father. We are to lead them towards God. Being saved is just the beginning of the journey. We as more mature Christians should disciple Christian babies and lead them towards God by modeling to them the life that Christ wants us to live. We are called to show them by the example of our own lives the way to becoming a true disciple of Christ.

To be the light of the world is to reflect His light in our lives.

But the truth is we cannot do it on our own power. We need to be daily refilled with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit never leaves us but we tend to become not receptive of it due to the noise by which we are surrounded in our daily lives.

We need to find the time daily to be still in His presence so that our soul may be refilled with His peace and then we should carry that peace into the world to witness to others.
