We all have this longing … for something that would satisfy our emptiness… something that would make us happy.
So we set out on a journey looking for that one thing that will bring us lasting satisfaction.
Sometimes we may think that if we just got married, then we would be happy. Or if we just got to travel more and see the world, then we would be happy. Or if we just accomplished that one thing, then we would be happy.
In the mean time we may medicate our emptiness with food, entertainment, and maybe even getting a pet to make us feel less lonely.
But are those things really helping us? Are they actually bringing us the satisfaction we crave for?
The food we eat only helps us to feel better for a short period of time leaving us feeling hungry in a few hours.
We continue pursuing our dreams to only be disappointed at the end. They don’t bring us the kind of satisfaction we were looking for.
Something bigger has to fill the void inside us that no human being or accomplishment can fill.
If we put the pressure on our spouse to make us happy and satisfied in life, then we will find ourselves disappointed. No human being is perfect.
Only God can satisfy our longing for joy and fulfillment in life.
The Bible says:
“Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength?
Why pay for food that does you no good?
Listen to me, and you will eat what is good.
You will enjoy the finest food.
Come to me with your ears wide open.
Listen, and you will find life.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you.
I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.”
(NLT, Isaiah 55:2-3)
Jesus is the only one who can satisfy our deepest longings. In John 4:14 He says:
“But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” (NLT, John 4:14)
So let us seek Jesus with all our hearts. Because only in Him we can find our true fulfillment and joy.
